EFT: How to use it

After the last article EFT: The Science Behind it, you are now wondering how you can use EFT to help improve your life. EFT is actually a very simple technique that anyone can learn to use.

Your body, like everything around us, is made up of energy. Sometimes our energy becomes imbalanced. When this happens we experience anxiety that can be caused by fear, grief, pain, stress, etc. EFT is a tool that we can use to help restore the proper balance to our body’s energy system.

EFT uses the meridian energy points, similar to acupuncture (except there are no needles involved!), to release the negative emotions that are left over from big or small traumas that we experience throughout our life. Tapping on these points stimulates the meridian point and helps to balance the flow of energy that is causing the negative response (emotion) to a memory.

In ancient times the Chinese discovered that there were 100 meridian points throughout our body. EFT uses 8 of the 100 points that run through out your body.

The basic technique requires you to focus (or ‘tune in’) to the negative emotion that you are experiencing (now or in the past); a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, or an unresolved problem that is still causing you pain or anguish. While you are focusing on this you use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on each of the body’s major meridian points (listed below). Tapping on these points while focusing on the negative emotion allows you to access your body’s energy, restoring it to a balanced state once more.

Before tapping on the meridian points we say a statement, what we call a setup statement. This allows you to tell your body what area you will be working on before you tap on the energy meridians. An example would be:

Even though I have this fear of water, I deeply accept and love myself.

This is a powerful statement. You are

1. Acknowledging the issue (whatever it might be)
2. Accepting yourself anyway
3. Loving yourself anyway

Our subconscious is a tricky thing. We might be living our life, thinking that we have resolved something when unknown to us, this event is still lingering on a subconscious level. We are then making decisions based off of these past emotions that have a huge effect on our life and happiness. EFT is a simple technique with such powerful results that anyone can receive.

Here are the Meridian points

EB – Eyebrow point
SE – Side of the eye
UE – Underneath the eye
UN – Underneath the nose
CH – Chin (underneath the bottom lip)
CB – Collarbone point
UA – Underneath the armpit
TOH – Top of the head

Putting it all together

To start out with, while thinking of the event you will rate how strong your anxiety is on a scale of 0 – 10 with 10 being very strong. Write this number down as you will want to see how you have improved after the first round of tapping. For this example we will say that our anxiety number is 7.

You begin with a setup statement. Let’s use the one I gave you above. You will say this statement three times while tapping on the karate chop point (KC)

Setup Statement: Even though I have this fear of water, I deeply accept and love myself. ( Repeated 3 times)

There is not a certain phrase to say when tapping. The most important thing to do is to ‘tune into’ the emotion or in this example your fear. This is what allows you to balance the flow of energy once more. The reason we do say something is because this will help you to stay tuned in. If you can not come up with anything then repeating the statement ‘fear of water’ while tapping on all of the meridian points will work just fine.

So tapping 5-7 times on each of the meridian points you will then say ‘fear of water’

EB – fear of water
SE – fear of water
UE – fear of water
UN – fear of water
CH – fear of water
CB – fear of water
UA – fear of water
TOH – fear of water

Once you have completed think about your anxiety once more, in this example your fear of water and rate how strong your anxiety is once more on a scale of 0 – 10. Hopefully your anxiety has gone done in number. So to continue our example, our anxiety number went from 7 to 4. So that is a big improvement. To continue on we will do another round of tapping.

Setup Statement: Even though I STILL have this fear of water, I deeply accept and love myself. ( Repeated 3 times)

Then tap 5-7 times on each of the meridian points you will then say ‘ remaining fear of water’

EB – remaining fear of water
SE – remaining fear of water
UE – remaining fear of water
UN – remaining fear of water
CH – remaining fear of water
CB – remaining fear of water
UA – remaining fear of water
TOH – remaining fear of water

You will once more rate the level of your anxiety. The number should once more go down.
